
Whole grains are the complete package of nutrient composition found in the unprocessed form. They normally contain bran, endosperm and the germ. The processed forms are empty in some of these aspects of the whole grain. Therefore the processed form is nutritionally deficient as opposed to the whole grain. Some examples of grains that we consume daily are wheat, maize, rice, millet, sorghum, oats and barley. We can have whole grain form or the nutrient deficient, processed form. Therefore for the purpose of healing, the whole grain would supply the body with it’s nutritional requirements better than the processed form.

Whole grains are rich in nutrients that help our bodies to carry out normal health promoting functions. They supply energy, vitamins, minerals and fiber amongst many others.
Most grains basically supply the following nutrient groups to our bodies:
- Proteins
- Carbohydrates
- Antioxidants
- Vitamins
- Minerals
- Oils
- Phytonutrients
Proteins help our bodies to make up the tissues. Carbohydrates are for energy. Vitamins and minerals play vital roles in many body processes that promote health and repair. Whole Grains are rich in fiber. They help improve digestion and proper absorption. They are useful in a weight loss program. The nutrient package in whole grains also help in breaking down excessive fat and it’s elimination.

Whole grains contain nutrients that help neutralise bad cholesterol hence preventing their deposition in the cardiovascular system. They help prevent arteriosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. These may block circulation in the heart precipitating a heart condition.

Our bodies are comprised of trillions of cells. These cells are living just like you and need nutrition to be healthy and perform their duties optimally. The source of their nutrition are found inside the whole grains. Processed grains are not complete and may promote subclinical malnutrition if not checked. Fiber slows down the rate at which blood sugar is increasing from the food being absorbed. Therefore the bodies insulin will be able to manage what’s in the blood system. Inflammation is generally a healing process. However, we have cases whereby the body is constantly in the Inflammation mode. Whole grains contain a rich arsenal of antioxidants that may help suppress this. Vitamins A, C, E and phytonutrients e.g flavonoids etc. are useful for this purpose.
Stroke Prevention
Stroke is basically as a result of the blockage within the microcirculation in the brain. Arteriosclerosis may promote the constriction of these arteries leading to blockage and then stroke.

Cancer has been blamed to be the by product of defective cells whose growth is outside control. Free radicals, by products of cellular oxidation has been blamed for this. Whole grains are bestowed with substances that are capable of neutralising these free radicals. They are called antioxidants. They comprise of vitamins and phytonutrients. From the above we can see that there is a world of difference between consuming a whole grain diet and a processed one in terms of nutritional value. Those who consume whole grains would have a better and vibrant immune system. On the other hand those who consume processed grains may suffer unknowingly from subclinical malnutrition and a chronic lifestyle diseases that seems incurable.
