Arthritis is a chronic degenerative disorder that mostly afflicts people of the age 40 and above. Over 100 types have been identified and are named based on the affected tissues in the body. They are generalized with inflammation and tissue destruction. The most common types are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid and gouty arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the wear and tear type and maybe found in obese elderly persons. The articular cartilage gets worn out due to the heavy load exerted on the joints leading to their grinding on each other. This leads to joint tissue damage, pain and swelling. In rheumatoid arthritis the immune system mistakes the synovial membrane as non self and attacks it. This leads to inflammation, joint tissue damage, swelling and pain. In gouty arthritis an excessive prescence of uric acid is at the root cause. The body is unable to get rid of this uric acid and is therefore converted to the salt form, urates. These are deposited in the joints leading to inflammation, pain and swelling. The big toe is the most favorite area of deposit.
